Renewal Requirements for Trainee Level

Child Care Services Certification 

 

The requirements for renewing Trainee Level Certification depend on:

  • The type of facility you work in
  • Your classification(s)
  • How long you previously held Entry Level Certification (if applicable) before the Newfoundland and Labrador Child Care Services Regulations came into effect on July 31, 2017.

 

Renewal requirements for those who hold:

Renewal requirements apply to individuals who hold:

  • Child Care Centre – Trainee Level (Preschool, School, and/or Pre-Kindergarten classification)
  • A combination of Child Care Centre – Trainee Level and Family Home – Trainee Level
  • Child Care Centre – Trainee Level combined with other levels or classifications
    Example: An individual with Child Care Centre – Level Three – School and Child Care Centre – Trainee Level – Preschool will follow the renewal requirements for Child Care Centre – Trainee Level – Preschool

 

Renewal Options

Option 1: Renewal with ECE College Courses

  • Maximum of 4 renewals in total
  • Complete at least 2 ECE courses from a provincially recognized post-secondary institution during the current certification period

Option 2: Renewal When ECE Courses Are Not Available

  • Maximum of 2 renewals in total
  • All of the following are required:
    1. Acceptance letter into an Early Childhood Education program from a recognized post-secondary institution (no older than 4 months)
    2. Proof that the required ECE courses are not available
    3. Professional Learning (PL) hours:
      • Before the expiry date: 10 PL hours
      • During the month of expiry: 12 PL hours
      • After the expiry month: 12 PL hours plus 1 additional PL hour for each month lapsed (maximum 60 PL hours)

Maximum renewals under Option 1 and Option 2 combined: 6 renewals

Renewal for Family Home – Trainee Level or Trainee Level under Grandparenting Clause

 Applies to individuals who hold:

  • Only Family Home – Trainee Level – Mixed Age (without Child Care Centre – Trainee Level)
  • Family Home – Trainee Level – Mixed Age combined with Child Care Centre – Level One or higher
  • Trainee Level Certification under the grandparenting clause
    (For individuals who obtained Entry Level Certification before July 1, 2007, and whose certification was valid when the new regulations came into effect on July 31, 2017)

Renewal Requirements:

Professional Learning (PL) hours required:

  • If application submitted before expiry date: 10 PL hours
  • If application submitted during the expiry month: 12 PL hours
  • If application submitted after expiry month: 12 PL hours plus 1 additional PL hour for each month lapsed (maximum 60 PL hours)

Step-By Step Guide on How to Submit Your Renewal Application Package:

 

Step 1: Read the Guide Renewal Child Care Services Certification Guide
Check the Renewal of Child Care Services Certification Guide in the Resources section on how to apply and what required documentation is needed.

Step 2: Download Renewal Application Form
Download and print the Renewal Application Form for Trainee Level.

Step 3: Complete the Form
Print clearly and complete all sections.

Step 4: List the documentation in the application
Failure to do so will result in the application package being returned to you.

Step 5: Attach Required Documents
Attach either originals or copies of required documentation to the Renewal Application form. 

 IMPORTANT!
 If you send in copies, keep the original documentation until you get your physical Child Care Services Certification renewal certificate. While we accept copies, you might need to provide the originals for verification.  If you cannot provide the originals, you might need to complete more PL hours.

Step 6: Sign and Date
Make sure the renewal application form is signed and dated. A typed electronic signature is not accepted.

Recruitment and Retention Grant
Individuals renewing as Trainee Level with combination of other certification Levels (For example, an individual holding Level Three - School and Trainee Level – Preschool) and currently working in a regulated child care service, may be eligible to receive the Recruitment and Retention Grant. To qualify, applicants must be awarded Level I to IV AECENL Child Care Services Certification (including those with a Trainee designation in combination with a level) and are working in a regulated child care setting. The Recruitment and Retention Grant Application must be submitted along with an Initial Child Care Services Certification Application, and no later than six months from the initial certification date. ECE  Trainee Bursary
Individuals who hold valid Trainee Level certification, are working in a regulated child care service and are in the process of completing ECE Certificate courses at a provincially recognized post-secondary institution may be eligible to receive the Trainee Bursary.
